Apothecary Espresso & Coffee

Apothecary Espresso & Coffee opened in downtown Farmington with a deliberately different goal than most coffee shops: owner Miguel Williams built it to be a community hub rather than a turn-and-burn counter, and the calendar backs that up — open mic comedy every second Friday, open mic poetry and prose monthly, live local music on first Fridays, and a weekly Thursday-night Super Smash Bros. tournament that’s built its own regular crowd. The coffee itself comes from Ann Arbor’s Stovetop Coffee Roasters, and the pastry case leans gluten- and nut-free.

The shop occupies a storefront that once housed a boutique (Tre Sorelle), which still gets dedicated retail space inside, and it sits close enough to Riley Park that Williams has talked about people walking through the park specifically to get to the shop. It’s the kind of place built for staying rather than grabbing and going, which shows in how packed the events calendar is for a coffee shop this size.
