Unexpected Craft Brewing Company

Our Take

Unexpected is the second act of a well-regarded story: it comes from the team behind River Rouge Brewing Company, the nanobrewery that once earned national notice, with founder Edward still on the brewhouse. The beer is the draw and it’s genuinely adventurous — hazy IPAs, fruited lagers, sours, and the cult peanut-butter-chocolate stout that followed the crew over from the old place — rounded out with house-made cider and wine for the non-beer crowd. Eater name-checked it among the metro’s bars worth knowing, and the taproom keeps the vibe easygoing and unpretentious.

There’s no kitchen, which is the point: a rotating pizza pop-up handles dinner, you’re welcome to settle in, and the patio is dog-friendly when the weather’s right. For a two-stop night, fellow independent Dog and Pony Show Brewing makes an easy Drink-list pairing. We’ve got it on our list as a low-key, beer-nerd-friendly reason to point yourself toward Oak Park.
