Sam Thompson’s Grave

Our Take

One of baseball’s first great sluggers is buried in the city where he starred. “Big Sam” Thompson was a right fielder for the 19th-century Detroit Wolverines (and later the Phillies) whose prodigious hitting set RBI records that stood for decades; he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, more than fifty years after his death.

He rests at Elmwood, an early Detroit sports hero among the city’s founders and legends. On our list.
