Bernhard Stroh’s Grave

Our Take

The beer that says Detroit came from a young German immigrant and a copper kettle. Bernhard Stroh arrived in 1850 and started brewing in Detroit, founding what would grow into the Stroh Brewery Company — for generations one of the city’s proudest, most stubbornly local institutions, and a name still stamped on Detroit’s memory (and its ice cream).

The founder himself rests at Elmwood. Pour one out — literally. On our list.
