Zachariah Chandler’s Grave

Before the Republican Party had a national reputation, Zachariah Chandler was helping build it in Detroit. A dry-goods merchant turned politician, he served as the city’s mayor, then four terms as a fiercely abolitionist U.S. senator, and later as secretary of the interior — one of the Radical Republicans who pushed hardest against slavery and, after the war, for Reconstruction.
