Dr. Charles H. Wright’s Grave

The museum on Warren Avenue that holds one of the nation’s largest collections of African American history began with one Detroit doctor’s conviction that the story had to be told. Dr. Charles H. Wright, an ob-gyn who also helped integrate the city’s hospitals, founded what started in 1965 as the International Afro-American Museum — today the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, a cornerstone of Detroit’s cultural life.

He rests at Elmwood, his legacy now visited by hundreds of thousands every year. On our list.
