Mathilda Dodge Wilson’s Mausoleum

When John Dodge died in 1920, his widow Mathilda inherited one of the largest fortunes in America — and spent the rest of her life proving she knew exactly what to do with it. She and second husband Alfred Wilson built Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, a 110-room Tudor Revival wonder that now anchors Oakland University, and gave away much of the rest. Her mausoleum at Woodlawn is a jewel in its own right: a crisp Art Deco design that stands out amid the Egyptian and Gothic monuments around it.

The Dodge boys get the sphinx-guarded tomb across the way, but Mathilda’s is the one worth lingering over — proof that the most interesting person in the family plot isn’t always the one the company was named for. On our list.
