M1 Concourse

Pontiac built the world’s cars; M1 Concourse is where the region goes to actually drive them. Opened in 2016 on the bones of a former GM truck plant, it’s 87 acres of unapologetic car culture: a 1.5-mile performance track (Champion Motor Speedway) ringed by 250-plus private garages where members keep everything from vintage muscle to six-figure exotics. You don’t need a Ferrari to get something out of it, though — M1 throws the gates open for public events that have become genuine Metro Detroit traditions, from the free Cars ‘n’ Coffee mornings to summer’s Roadkill Nights and Woodward Dream Show and October’s American Speed Festival. And it’s about to get a lot more walk-up-friendly: the new X Center, opening in 2026, adds public electric-kart racing, simulators, and dining with a museum-style gate fee, no membership required. It’s a very Woodward, very Pontiac kind of place — loud, a little flashy, and genuinely fun whether or not you can tell a carburetor from a camshaft. On our list, and an easy sell for out-of-town guests who think Detroit car culture is a museum piece.
