Madcap Coffee

Madcap is the coffee anchor of Parker’s Alley — the Grand Rapids-born roaster’s first Detroit café, opened alongside the Shinola Hotel in early 2019, a bright, black-and-white minimalist room on Farmer Street where the beans arrive freshly roasted from West Michigan every week. This is proper third-wave territory: rotating single-origin pourovers and espressos, batch brew, cold brew and nitro tea, seasonal staff-invented drinks, and a blend named Detroit 313 for the hometown crowd. Pastries come from Detroit’s own Give Thanks Bakery, and on a nice day the alley-side outdoor seating is one of downtown’s more pleasant places to nurse a cup. They’ll even validate your parking at the Z garage on Broadway.

We passed its windows on our alley stroll and made a mental note for the next downtown morning — it’s on our list as the natural first stop of a Parker’s Alley wander, caffeine before commerce, with bags of their single-origins by the register if you want to take the habit home. Consider it the alley’s official opening act.
