Silver Spring Well

Silver Spring Well is a quietly beloved fixture on South Main Street that predates most of downtown Northville’s current storefronts — locals have been filling bottles here from an artesian spring since at least 1913. In the 1920s, the Silver Springs Water Company bottled water from the same underground source just across the nearby railroad tracks and shipped it throughout the region and onto passing trains. The original flow mysteriously stopped running in the 1960s, and Northville’s Rotary Club stepped in to sink a new well and restore it, a stewardship role Rotary has held ever since, even as the source has since switched over to the Detroit municipal water system.

It’s not a destination in the way a restaurant or shop is — there’s no storefront, no hours to check, just a small public well that’s become a genuine piece of local ritual. It’s also one of roughly twenty stops on the Northville Heritage Hike, a free self-guided walking tour of the historic district built by local Boy Scout Troop 755.
